Imogen Heap is interactive queen of digital age
17 August 2009 | doiank

I am laying down a track with Imogen Heap. I’ve — stupidly — arrived at the Mayfair offices of her PR company without the wherewithal to record the interview, so I’ll have to fall back on my rusty shorthand, and as “rusty” here is a euphemism for “nonexistent”, this is far from ideal.

Most interview subjects would be tutting impatiently at my incompetence. But Heap springs into action. “Don’t worry,” she says, “I’ll record the interview on my laptop.” She proceeds to pull not one but two wafer-thin Apple laptops from her bag. After deliberating for a moment on the memory available in each, she selects the smaller of the two and fires up GarageBand — the software she’s been using for the past two years to write the songs on her new album, Ellipse — and we start recording.
